About EPA 608 Certification
EPA 608 Certification is required for people who work with controlled refrigerants associated with HVAC and air conditioning or refrigeration systems. There are different types of certification you may need depending on the work you do.
CORE – Students are required to pass this section for all types of certification.
TYPE I Certification – For technicians working on small appliances containing less than 5 lbs. of refrigerant, like small household refrigerators and portable air conditioners.
TYPE II Certification – For technicians working on appliances using medium to high pressure refrigerants like HCFC-22. This includes commercial refrigeration, heat pumps and some residential refrigeration units.
Type III Certification – For technicians working on appliances using low pressure refrigerants like CFC-11 or HCFC-123, used primarily in chiller applications.
Universal Certification – For technicians who want to be able to work on all types of refrigerant systems and appliances.
American Trainco does not provide licensing for technicians or contractors that may be required in some states, although our training courses and passing an HVAC test or EPA 608 Certification test can help prepare you for such exams and satisfy EPA requirements. Please consult your local governing authority for information about your specific requirements.
