About the Instructor

William (Bill) Joseph Dumas

As the founder and owner of William J. Dumas & Associates, Mr. “Bill” Dumas has conducted "Hands-On" Programmable Logic Controller, Motor Controls and other electrical training seminars throughout the United States since 1987. The training he provides is some of the most highly acclaimed in the industry. Enjoying the fruits of his success and being semi-retired, Mr. Dumas has agreed to a special engagement with American Trainco, Inc. where he will provide real world “Hands-On” PLC training for American Trainco and its customers.

Mr. Dumas has a degree in Electrical Technology from Mohawk Valley Technical Institute in Utica, NY and served as an electronic technician at Griffis Air Force Base in Rome, NY before being accepted into the Electrical Engineering program at Northeastern University, in Boston, MA.

From there he accumulated over fifteen years experience in control and logic design, testing, training, and customer support working as an Engineering Assistant with Honeywell, Inc., and Computer Control Company where he designed and tested computer systems for business as well as the space program. He then accepted a position as Manager of Logic Design Engineering with Mohawk Data Sciences, where he provided primary support to the Ford Motor Company. He became the owner of D&K Titan Associates, a design/build Electrical Contracting Company, and was a Construction Manager for a prominent developer in Syracuse, NY. He also served as Vice-President of VIP Structures – Atlanta, architectural firm that developed commercial buildings. He was then asked to develop and present PLC and Motor Control course offerings for National Technology Transfer, Inc. (NTT).

William J. Dumas is one of the most dynamic instructors in the control industry. His presentations are practical, informative and entertaining. He is known for his unique ability to make difficult subjects exciting and easy to understand. Participant evaluations frequently state that it is by far the most informative training seminar they have ever attended.

Purpose of Seminar:

American Trainco’s first PLC course, "PLCs for Non-Programmers" introduced everyday maintenance people to the world of PLCs. This second PLC skill-building seminar presented by William J. Dumas & Associates provides the necessary "hands-on" practice needed to interpret, isolate, and diagnose common hardware problems related to noise, power, and discrete and analog I/O.

Using various troubleshooting scenarios, students will apply basic ladder logic interpretation to diagnostic tasks, which will be traced through ladder logic instructions in simulated live project. Multifaceted troubleshooting skills will be integrated throughout course to complete the training.

This seminar is taught in a hands-on environment where applicable demonstrations are included to facilitate the hands-on exercises that follow each lesson.

Who should take this course?

This course is created for those who have little or no "hands-on" work experience with programmable logic controllers. It can be especially valuable for individuals who are responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining SLC500™ systems using RSLogix500™ software, but because of the generic approach to this seminar users of all PLC systems will find this course extremely beneficial. It is also recommended for participants who are planning to take the more advanced 3-day seminar, "Programmable Logic Controllers: Applications and Programming".

Attendees come from a wide variety of industries, skill-levels, company sizes, and job titles, so if you're not sure you'll fit in or benefit from this class, don't worry - you will - as long as you have an interest in working on PLCs. Attendees include...

All maintenance personnel in:

  • Manufacturing Plants
  • Commercial Buildings
  • Hospitals
  • Waste Water Facilities
  • Schools
  • Government Buildings
  • Research Facilities
  • Shopping Centers
  • Airports

Including:

  • Apprentice and Experienced Electricians
  • Instrumentation Technicians
  • All Building Maintenance Personnel
  • All Plant & Facility Maintenance Technicians
  • Building Engineers
  • Building Managers & Superintendents
  • Plant & Facility Managers
  • Multi-craft & Cross Training Personnel
  • Mechanical Engineers
  • Any person needing a "Hands-On" understanding of PLC basics

Training Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will receive a training certificate and 1.6 American Trainco Continuing Education Units indicating that the student has learned to:

  1. Identify the main components of programmable controller systems and describe their functions
  2. Describe the flow of information through a programmable controller system
  3. Navigate through the PLC software
  4. Transfer, monitor, and run simulated, live projects
  5. Interpret simple ladder logic programs
  6. Isolate and safely correct PLC system problems
  7. Interpret ladder logic for the purpose of troubleshooting
  8. Make changes to hardware and programs as specified by others
