About AT Boiler Safety & Maintenance CertificationTM
The AT Boiler Safety & Maintenance CertificationTM
designation sets the standard for our mission of Creating a Better, Safer, and more
Efficient Maintenance Workforce! Obtaining certification from the nation’s leader in
maintenance training will provide you with the documentation you need to positively
demonstrate your knowledge about boiler maintenance and safety practices.
The exam is a timed test, taken under the live supervision of a proctor, which ensures the
validity and consistency of the testing process and gives credibility to the final score.
The exam is made up of 50 multiple choice questions taken from a larger bank of questions,
and the order of questioning may vary from test to test to ensure validity. A score of 70%
is required to pass the exam and receive AT certification. Most people who study and have
received prior training will score in the 70% to 85% range, which is considered “good” for
this test. There will be a number of people who fail however, giving the exam even more
credibility for those who pass it.
This certification may be used by the employer as part of an overall worker safety and
maintenance program, for assessing the needs of workers, and can be used by the individual
to demonstrate his knowledge to an employer and give him an edge over other workers.

Prerequisites
Students must know boiler safety and maintenance prior to taking the exam. This is not a
training course.
Individuals must have a good understanding of the material in their study guide prior to
coming in to take the test and should not expect to pass it without having first completed
an American Trainco Boiler training program or other formal training program. Some
experienced individuals may be able to pass the exam without prior training; however, it
is not uncommon for “experienced” individuals to fail.
Those seeking certification should come prepared and ready to take the exam! Refunds are
not allowed for people who start the test but then discover they aren’t ready.

Is certification in boiler safety & maintenance required?
No. Certification in boiler safety & maintenance is not a legal requirement.
Like “CEU’s” (Continuing Education Credits), certification in this area can mean
different things to different people, businesses or other entities. Since there
is no legal requirement for this certification it is up to the employer to determine
its value for their workplace and employees, and may be adopted by the employer as
part of a an overall safety or maintenance program.
This certification is not a replacement or substitute for boiler licensing that
may be required in some states or other governing jurisdictions. It is intended only
as a way for individuals to demonstrate their boiler safety and maintenance knowledge
to their employer and does not guarantee that a person passing the exam or receiving
the AT Boiler Safety & Maintenance CertificationTM designation is qualified for the
work they are doing. That responsibility and determination belongs to the employer
or governing state or jurisdiction. The AT Boiler Safety & Maintenance CertificationTM
is designed to assist an employer in making that determination.
