About ATMT “EPA 608” Technician CertificationTM

EPA Refrigerant Technician Certification Testing is required by all individuals who open a system or container holding a controlled refrigerant. Persons who work on stationary equipment or use refrigerants designed for these systems can become certified by passing the Section 608 EPA Refrigerant Technician Certification Exam.

CORE - To pass any EPA type, a technician must pass the CORE section of the test plus one of the technician types listed below. Once CORE is passed it need not be taken again and it may be used for additional EPA types.

Type I - EPA 608 Testing is for technicians working on small appliances, such as domestic refrigerators, window air conditioners, PTAC's and vending machines.

Type II - EPA 608 Testing is for technicians working on equipment using high-pressure refrigerant such as HCFC-22. The equipment includes residential air conditioners and heat pumps, supermarket refrigeration and process refrigeration.

Type III - EPA 608 Testing is for technicians working on equipment using a low-pressure refrigerant such as HCFC-123 or CFC-11. The units are primarily chillers.

Universal - A technician passing all three EPA types; Type I, Type II and Type III is certified as Universal and can service all appliances.

The ATMT “EPA 608” Technician CertificationTM meets legal requirements for handling refrigerants and helps fulfill our mission of Creating a Better, Safer, and more Efficient Maintenance Workforce! Obtaining certification from the nation’s leader in maintenance training will not only make you legal, but it will provide you with the documentation you need to positively demonstrate your knowledge about refrigerants and safe handling practices.

The exam is a timed test, taken under the live supervision of a proctor, which ensures the validity and consistency of the testing process and gives credibility to the final score.

The exam is made up of multiple choice questions. The order of questioning may vary from test to test to ensure validity. A score of 70% is required to pass the exam and receive certification. Most people who study and have received prior training will score in the 70% to 85% range, which is considered “good” for this test. There will be a number of people who fail however, giving the exam even more credibility for those who pass it.

This certification is used for employer and employee EPA compliance, and may also be used by the employer as part of an overall worker safety and maintenance program, for assessing the needs of workers, and can be used by the individual so that he can handle refrigerants and to demonstrate his knowledge to an employer or vendor and give him an edge over other workers.

Agenda

Registration and Q&A review with proctor:   1:30pm – 2:20pm
Testing Starts: 2:30pm
Testing Ends: 3:30pm

Prerequisites

Students must understand refrigerants and basic air conditioning and refrigeration prior to taking the exam. This is not a training course.

Individuals must have a good understanding of the material in their study guide prior to coming in to take the test and should not expect to pass it without having first completed an American Trainco air conditioning and refrigeration training program or other formal training program. Some experienced individuals may be able to pass the exam without prior training; however, it is not uncommon for “experienced” individuals to fail.

Those seeking certification should come prepared and ready to take the exam! Refunds are not allowed for people who start the test but then discover they aren’t ready.

If you have not yet received formal air conditioning and refrigeration training Go to the Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Training Schedule now.
